In Resource, students are being supported based on Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals. We individualize instruction to fit their needs in Reading and Math.
Math: In general we cover the basic operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, when appropriate. We practice skip counting, telling time, and counting money. We try to infuse what the regular classroom is currently learning with what we program in for our students. We use games, worksheets, flashcards, manipulatives, and real-world applications. We give the extra practice needed to master objectives.
Reading: In small groups, students practice phonics, fluency, decoding strategies, and comprehension skills. We read books and complete worksheets and activities that match the student’s instructional level. We also use flashcards, games, graphic organizers, and letter/word tiles. Because we use Developmental Reading Assessments (DRA) and Leveled Reading Passages (LRP) to measure student’s reading levels, we focus on accuracy, fluency, and comprehension in everyday instruction.
Behavior: With the students who have behavior goals, we often have them follow a plan in which we chart behavior based on their daily social skills. Based on their plans, they may earn a reward for appropriate behaviors. Goals are determined by parents and teachers at IEP meetings. Throughout their day, we try to teach the appropriate social and coping skills to help them be successful on their plans.
